The name alludes to the pharmacy that once occupied this (now) prime real estate. Old people hang out here during the afternoon and early evening hours. After that point, better-heeled youngsters—the type who use expressions like “delish,” “tasty,” “broham,” and “whatevs,” as well as near middle-age types tired of the club scene—flood in looking for a downscale experience.
Stoneleigh P is indeed laid back, in an Uptown sort of way: a dim, throwback interior, a basic patio, and unadorned service turn conversation into the focal point. But the food stands apart. The kitchen apparently works hard to achieve such a distinction, overcooking everything from burgers to soup...though it’s difficult to imagine just how it manages that particular feat. If not for the presence of alcohol in large quantities, generally downed before setting foot in the place, Stoneleigh P would rank alongside train wreck debris.
It’s a place for haggard six-figure types to huddle over a Shiner Bock and bad burger, without worrying the wait staff secretly make fun of their taste in food and drink. The beer list does extend well beyond Shiner. And despite the kitchen’s slacker attributes, the city needs such a spot.
