“What the Fearless Critic books and apps have that UrbanSpoon and Yelp don’t is a complete lack of bullshit.”
“I’ve spent years driving around with Zagat...but I think I’ll replace it with this Fearless Critic guide.”

Tacos El Guero
Delicious, authentic Mexican—go for the interesting meats

Upon approaching Tacos El Guero, you might start second guessing your decision to visit this tiny taco stand in East Dallas. It’s not in the best neighborhood, and during even moderately busy hours you’ll have to squeeze inside to place your order. The chances of finding a seat are slim, so you’ll probably be eating inside of, or standing next to, your car. Despite the less than optimal environment, however, Tacos El Guero is a gem of a taquería that serves authentic varieties of tacos rarely found in Dallas.

If it’s your first visit, the staff will offer you a complimentary taco de suadero—brisket that’s been braised and chopped, then griddled to yield a variety of textures from melting tenderness to crispy browned bits. Another unusual but worthy offering here is cabeza, which is culled together from various parts of the head again yielding a range of textures and flavors, all delicious. And the lengua (tongue), while commonly available, is uncommonly prepared, here served as a long continuous slab that brings an additional textural component to the otherwise soft meat.

More standard offerings like chorizo or steak fajita tacos are delicious as well. All of the meats are also available as quesadillas (by appending the name of the meat with –queso –choriqueso, –suaderiqueso, etc). Whatever you get, ask for both the fiery red and milder green salsas to complement your meal.
