The term “shack” is not far from the mark. As with all great food shacks, the Raquel Garcia environs are causal. It’s the quintessential neighborhood dive: pure bedraggled-diner-meets-nautical-(ship-wreck). It even has a drive-through. And the food is as straightforward as it is delicious.
The highlight of the shack is the weekly rotation of specials painted right on the window. Skip Tuesday’s oysters (not the best we’ve sampled), but be sure to drop by on Mondays to sample the inexpensive ceviche tostadas. They’re piled high with tangy marinated fish. Or try your tostada topped with creamy shrimp. Slices of avocado and hot sauce (add your own at the table) complete the dish.
On Wednesdays, savor a full pound of snow crab or shrimp in a spicy boil with sides of corn and potatoes. On any day, feast on the deliciously crisp (they are good at frying here!) shrimp or fish flautas. Or a Mexican-style shrimp coctel in spicy tomato sauce tamed by cooling cubes of avocado.
