The name evokes sophomoric, Monty Python-themed pub expectations: dark wood, Watney’s Red Barrel, and Spam, wonderful Spam. Good on the first—dark wood indeed frames the long dining and bar area. Yet Holy Grail Pub has more in common with the recent gastropub movement than the stereotypical English public house. It’s not only a beer lover’s destination, but also employs some talent in the kitchen.
First, the beer: more than 40 changing selections on tap, as well as a collection of large shared bottles—perhaps the largest collection in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Bartenders speak the language of microbrews and imports with confidence, noting subtle shades of flavor as well as pairings to time of year, mood, and meal.
And the food? There’s a burger that compares well to the best in this region; meatloaf balancing the flavors of beef, pork, and turkey; ribs braised in beer (what else?); oddball items like chicken Kiev; trays of artisanal cheese; and good desserts prepared in house (try the doughnuts). Like Monty Python, they draw a few quirky guests. About the time nearby corporate offices shut down, it becomes a khaki-and-polo showcase. But all in all, Holy Grail Pub is one of the best pubs in this region.
