This emblematic hip-strip icon is just plain fun, from the midcentury-Danish décor, to the window wall that offers views of the eye candy on South Congress, to the creative platings and surprisingly hospitable prices.
The menu covers the South and Southwest, but with a twist. Homemade flour tortillas are 100% buttery deliciousness. Semolina-crusted calamari steaks are tender and crusty heaven. The misses are mostly frustrating because the hits hit so hard: a house-made pepper-infused vodka has a real kick to it and makes a great martini. Pork tenderloin has delicious blue corn chorizo stuffing, and meatloaf gets a Texan kick with jalapeños, venison, and a poblano demi-glace. Brunch comes with a bottomless basket of sweet, crunchy cornbread muffins, best with a wild boar pozole that is sinus-clearingly spicy and will cure any hangover. A perfunctory migas order can come creamy and outstanding, or somewhat dry and underwhelming, and there’s carrot cake French toast, which is great…for about three bites. Happily, brunch runs daily until 4pm.
The wine list is a little silly (unless you deem Pine Ridge’s Chenin Blanc/Viognier blend a “Fascinating White”), but the great margaritas and Bloody Marys are ideal for this fun and classy night—or morning—out.
