Dirty Martin’s is one of those places to which, no matter how hard you try, you’ll never actually dissuade yourself from going. It’s got a magical combination of grease (lots of grease) with just the right crowd (it’s young and college-y, but fun no matter who you are) that has made it a mainstay on the Drag.
And because we love how it’s loyally catered to the UT crowd since 1926, it’s hard to say this: the burgers have lost that lovin’ feelin’ (just a little). They’re still of that soft, squishy, flat variety—asking for them rare misses the point—and come on sweet buns shiny with fat, in traditional plastic baskets. For greasy-spoon burgers, they’re pretty good, and they certainly improve with some bacon, extra cheese, and grilled onions, as well as a side of big, juicy onion rings with flaky batter.
Shakes and malts are popular and extremely thick. We’re even fonder of the fountain drinks: floats, cherry Cokes, and homemade lemon and limeade. The taps pour reliable Austin brews like Live Oak and (512), and happy hour pitcher and appetizer specials are ideal for student budgets.
Austin might be rapidly outgrowing its college-town feel, but little nooks like this one reassure us that it never really will. No matter what the burgers do.
