Stafford, you lucky dogs! Tornado Burger is housed in an old fast food drive-thru joint on a strip center outparcel. The inside’s spare and kitschy, with corrugated-metal-paneled walls, vinyl booths, and a handful of small tables with rickety chairs. The drop ceiling has been removed, and old bicycles and sleds and such hang from the rafters. Maybe a tornado dropped them there.
Burgers come with single, double, and triple patties, which come in either regular or “spicy,” with jalapeños and garlic mixed in. Despite being thin and cooked to well done, they’re quite flavorful—but you really need to order a spicy double (at least) for the bread-to-meat ratio to work. You’ll also need to ask for easy lettuce and maybe do a little repositioning, or the stuff will fly out after a bite. The french fries here are thin, hand-cut beauties that are crisp on the outside and slightly mealy on the inside. They come rather old school in a Styrofoam soft-drink cup (dump them out to keep them crisp or they’ll steam themselves).
Be prepared for a bit of a wait after ordering—these puppies aren’t pre-made. You might want to avoid the drive-thru, or else risk waiting in your car for 10 minutes. After sitting in traffic to get here, you probably don’t want that.
