Years ago, this was the place where 09’ers went on Sunday evenings when the maid had the night off. It still attracts many of those same people, their children and grandchildren, most of whom can be seen in the bar downing a few of the fine margaritas before heading in to dinner. You may need some of that fortification yourself, because the margaritas are far better than anything else in the restaurant. The food is Tex-Mex toned down to the point of perceiving no pulse. Or flavor. But then what to expect from a menu that has among its categories “Sopas y Saladas” and “Principal Especialidad”?
The “Guero Guapo Especial” is billed as a charbroiled chopped steak topped with queso. Instead, it tastes like a day-old burger slipped under a thick, protective covering of processed cheese food. Flooding the plate with fresh pico de gallo may help some, but this dish is DOA. Alternatively, you could opt for the “Pollo de Americano,” chicken breast with pineapple and cottage cheese. But why, oh why?
Tableside guacamole is offered on the weekends, but you could watch yourself mash up riper avocados. Even the rice and beans are dull—not just bland, but punishingly underseasoned in a way that shows off the third-rate ingredients used. Just order another margarita (there are a few, but only a few, premium tequilas as well) and pray it deadens your taste buds.
