Sompong’s serves both Thai and Chinese food, but as the name implies the former provides the most interesting choices. (Seriously, do you think we’d order Chinese at a Thai joint?) All of the usual suspects are present, including a good rendition of pad Thai and various curries and—well there’s nothing ground-breakingly special that would draw the attention of food snobs, except maybe a wide variety of dishes with tofu, making the place a great choice for vegetarians. But what they have is all one needs for a quick, casual taste of Asia (that is blessedly free from being over-salted).
Sompong’s interior is contemporary strip center décor personified—on the plus side. The place is scrupulously clean and the oak chairs are a nice upgrade from the usual food-service furnishings. Some demur, but we have found the service very pleasant, efficient, and fast, (so you may get your main before you have finished your soup). The music is unobtrusive and plays at just the right volume. So here’s the deal: If you are looking for a better than decent Thai meal in nice surroundings with good service at a reasonable price—and you’re in the ‘hood, then why not?
