This cute neighborhood favorite makes one of the best breakfast tacos in Austin: fat and buttery, with superlative bacon for this genre and salsa so fresh and garlicky that you’ll need two extra. At lunch and dinner, it’s all about the rotisserie chicken—served by the quarter, half, or whole—with warm flour tortillas, charro beans (vegetarian), and rice. Don’t be shy about eating the skin: it’s where all the charred flavor is at, and it helps out the somewhat dry, sticky white meat. If you are even the slightest bit ill, get the soup, whose squash and corn and chicken-fat slicks have a healing power that rivals even the exalted Jewish-grandmother version. When you dip your buttery flour tortillas in it: magic. There are a few great vegetarian options, such as nachos and cheese enchiladas (no American cheese here) with lively tomatillo sauce.
Julio’s maintains a Hyde Park-neat appearance while still being shabby enough to trust. The walls are painted in festive colors, black and cherry wood furnishings are nice (but definitely lived in), and it’s often filled to capacity with the young, the old, the affluent, and starving students. Dog owners frequent the leafy, peaceful patio, watching Hyde Park’s local color with Mexican beers, sangría made to order, and decent Mexican martinis and margaritas. Just beware the aggressive grackles.
