Original Philly’s is one of few places making a decent no-frills, no-gourmet-upgrades cheesesteak. Former East Coasters will recognize the soft Italian rolls and neon-colored Cheez Whiz, which also covers the awful crinkle-cut fries. Add a Tastykake, and you’ve got a pretty good approximation of Philly fast food, though at Seattle prices. Tat’s Deli in Pioneer Square has lured some cheesesteak connoisseurs away, but Original Philly’s still has a loyal following, because they just never mess with a tried-and-true recipe.
Although most people go specifically for the cheesesteaks, which come in chicken and mushroom varieties as well (you should know better than to order them, though), Original Philly’s also makes some pretty good processed-deli-meat hoagies in the Italian vein (e.g., salami, capicola, provolone, and the usual fixings).
To further make Philly expats feel at home, this place is pretty busted. Make do at one of the slightly grungy booths or at the broken Pac-Man machine—to-go orders are usually necessary in extreme weather, as this place is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.
