“What the Fearless Critic books and apps have that UrbanSpoon and Yelp don’t is a complete lack of bullshit.”
“I’ve spent years driving around with Zagat...but I think I’ll replace it with this Fearless Critic guide.”

The Jalopy
Maybe the best time you’ll ever have hanging out at a Mack Truck

There are a lot of good sandwiches in Austin; and a lot of mediocre ones with impressive marketing. But The Jalopy does more than just a good sandwich, it does good Austin; or rather, its (less-frequently occurring) inimitable quirkiness—in this case, a Mack Truck painted by several different artists of the psychedelic, surrealist, cartoony, adorable, and sometimes scary persuasions. Its part-funhouse-part-serious-kitchen attitude is apparent in the purple window-to-ground slide upon which your sandwich rides once finished, and by the colorful and careful assembling of the homemade ingredients within.

The principal here is an outstanding brined and herbed rotisserie chicken, which lends a likable grounding to far-out textures and flavors: puckery pepperoncini tapenade with spicy pickled peppers; cayenne-maple syrup and thick French toast with powdered sugar; peanut sauce, Sriracha, and pickled onions. Each works well, if for roughly the same reason—often a satisfying crunch and vigorous wallop of flavor; eat soon after ordering, however, as the good French boule will get soggy under all this juice.

Refreshingly, there are a few vegetarian choices, including a delicious (gently) pickled green apple with brie and almonds. There’s even a hearty egg-chicken taco and egg-ham sandwich ’til 10am (the truck closes then, and reopens for lunch at 11am). Fried veggie chips are sprinkled to order with your choice of seasoning. Check Twitter to see where they are late night on Fridays and Saturdays.
