Jimmy John’s is in 39 states, but given that there are nearly a dozen locations in Austin alone, it seems more like a local chain. The red-and-white fast-foody interiors are filled with pretty corporate attempts at unorthodox humor, which can feel forced. It doesn’t hurt that many campus-area locations are open until 3am, or that the smell of freshly baked bread wafts down the street. The bread is the best part about these sandwiches, which are pretty standard on the innards. Our favorite order is a “Big John,” with shaved roast beef that is tender and salted just enough, red and juicy tomatoes, and a generous (but not gloopy) spreading of mayonnaise. It’s an acid-fat delight, and the warm French bread really makes it something special. A crisp BLT served on thick 7-grain bread is perfect for homesick undergrads. We also like the “Italian Night Club,” a correct rendition of the Jersey/Philly-style Italian cold-cut grinder with those irresistibly vinegary hot peppers.
Sandwiches come in an eight-inch size and “giant,” which has roughly twice the fillings. (There’s also an “Unwich” without the bread, but what’s the point?) On the other hand, for less than $9, you can fill up on a “Gargantuan,” which describes its volume in tonnage. Oversized cookies are good in that squishy, butter-and-sugar-overloaded sort of way. Have an Unwich and you’re allowed.
