“What the Fearless Critic books and apps have that UrbanSpoon and Yelp don’t is a complete lack of bullshit.”
“I’ve spent years driving around with Zagat...but I think I’ll replace it with this Fearless Critic guide.”

Don’t get brain freeze trying to decide; just head for this all-natural, homegrown trailer

The frozen yogurt scene in Austin has reached DEFCON 1. Do we really need this many adorable, shiny, chilly-treat spots? We’ll make it easy for you: MamboBerry. After an in-depth analysis (read: fro-yo crawl), we’ve decided this cartoony trailer is the best. Now, it helps if you’re already a fan of the Pinkberry chain in California, whose yogurt is slightly gritty, a stylistic choice we rather like, as much as we like completely creamy gelato. You may find MamboBerry’s tart base less tart than Pinkberry’s—a good thing, when you consider that famous tartness comes from a lot of unpronounceable chemicals.

Not so in all-natural Austin. This yogurt is produced right here in town using White Mountain Bulgarian-style yogurt, which has long been one of our favorite local products—and is eminently pronounceable. The friendly, way laid-back staff will let you taste them. In addition to berries (which aren’t necessarily local and seasonal) and nuts, you can have chocolate morsels or Cap’n Crunch sprinkled on top.

There are also smoothies (a little watery); a pretty convincing and filling eggless egg salad sandwich; and a few different vegan tamales, like a sweet potato and pecan that’s kind of dessert-y. Tacodeli breakfast tacos are available until 10:30am and are, appropriately, as white-bread as the fro-yo.
