Barracuda peddles reasonably authentic Mexican street food at only slightly inflated prices (inflated by taco standards, at least—we’re still talking single digits). They have tortas and sopas, but the tacos are the focus here; tangy al pastor, and luscious lengua (tongue) are amongst the highlights. Barbacoa comes as a breakfast taco, with eggs and cheese added to the slow-cooked beef.
All of these tacos are really tasty—the corn tortillas are handmade, and the fish tacos are seasonal, based on what’s available at the market. Two of the less obvious offerings, the black mole and the menudo (tripe soup), are the weakest.
On the balance, this is probably the most attractive taco joint in town: an oriental rug drapes the wood floors by the counter, and although some of the hodge-podge of wooden chairs are painted white and green, there’s precious little garish Mexican paraphernalia. The only attempt at art is a Mondrian-esque mural made of Dos Equis bottlecaps. Barracuda isn’t too trendy, though: it’s as low-key as a place with decent cheap sangría should be.
