Brindles, a cheery space propitiously located between a beer emporium and a discount book store, is decked out in pastel colors, many of which find their way into the frozen products. (Some colors normally not found in nature also appear, with the aquamarine Lollipop being one of them.) The shop specializes in homemade ice cream, gelati, and sorbets in a host of inventive and, more important, fun flavors, ranging from a bright Granny Smith apple sorbet and Grand-Marnier-laced chocolate to pumpkin pie and Guinness. The lineup varies regularly as the selection is made fresh daily.
The ice creams are rich with a voluptuous mouth feel that extends the assertive flavors of cardamom, ginger, mint, Southern Comfort, and Dr. Pepper. The gelati are not overly slick, as you often find elsewhere, and the airiness whipped in makes them light and clean. An underground waiter source confirmed that downtown’s Biga gets their ice creams and gelati there and that “80% of them are very good.” As bellwether scoops, the excellent nocciola (hazelnut) conjures lazy afternoons in Italy, while the pistachio is just the tiniest bit synthetic-tasting. House creations like “Muddy Feet” will solve any flavor concerns by socking you with warm cookie dough and cool vanilla ice cream topped off with hot fudge, caramel, almonds and whipped cream.
For the java lover, there is also an espresso bar with an array of coffee drinks. The decaf Americano is wimpy, but then you’d never order one anyway.
