This no-frills Vietnamese bakery has some stiff competition in the banh mi arena from the excellent Nguyen Ngo across the street. But if you come to the Hong Kong 4 shopping center, you might as well swing by here to pick up some sandwiches to go. You’ll have to elbow your way past the pushy customers that pack the place, and compete for the attention of the busy, curt staff...but isn’t that part of the joy of metropolitan living?
The standout here is the bread, made on-site and warmed in the toaster before each sandwich is made. The combination meat’s our favorite order, with a little gamey pâté and fresh-tasting, crunchy pickled vegetables—ask for a little extra mayo and pâté for the most indulgent treat; chicken can be good or a little dry and stringy, depending upon what time you get it. Still, it’s hardly a bust. Make sure to grab some of the great pre-packaged items like vegetarian stir-fry and banh cam (fried sesame balls with sweet bean filling). And it’s not unusual to see older ladies grabbing 10 sandwiches to take home and feed people with later—they reheat in the toaster oven pretty nicely; or take some baguette home for that simple, traditional French breakfast of champions.
