If you’re south of the river, this is the best espresso to be had, pulled, as is the norm among our top espresso places, on a La Marzocco machine (one of the industry leaders in Italian espresso machinery; it apparently has an iPhone app now, should you wish to drool over shiny chrome models and their specs). Once Over uses Spicewood’s Cuvée, available both in blends and also as single-origins, although the regular coffee’s French pressed en masse and then stored in an urn, to be tapped when ordered; it’s by no means ideal, but the espresso drinks are blameless. What’s more, this place is 100% South Austin, meaning there’s not an ounce of attitude, and its secondhand furnishings lend a lived-in feeling that’s great for all-day hanging out (although it’s claustrophobia-inducing).
When you’ve overcranked yourself on caffeine, there’s a decent little beer selection (in bottle), including American micros and even a Salvadoran pilsner, which is ideal with the great tacos from the El Primo trailer practically in the parking lot. What’s more, they’ll let you bring these inside. Plus, Once Over gives a 10% discount when you use cash, and knocks a quarter off your price if you bring your own cup. Now that’s just plumb neighborly.
