As Austin’s Second Street District grows up (and up and up), it’s taking on a squeaky-clean urban feel, thanks in part to the chic ground-level shops and cafés that hold up thirty-odd floors of modern condos.
And no urban residential area is complete without a corner grocery, a role filled aptly by Royal Blue. Your essentials are all here: paper towels, toilet paper, garbage bags, and so on—all of the usual, affordable, no-frills variety. The ingestible essentials go a step further, with local products like Slow Burn and Jaime’s salsas (R.I.P., sweet Spanish Village!) salsas and Katz coffee beans; Niman Ranch and Boar’s Head meats fill the deli case, and you can get a really decent sandwich here on your way upstairs.
The most cosmopolitan moments at Royal Blue come in the form of its magazines and newspapers—get your New York Times here—and, most of all, its wine selection, which has pleasantly surprised us ever since the shop opened its first location, a few blocks away from its newest. What a refreshing change from the norm: these are the wines, both from our shores and others, that coax appreciative murmurs from wine industry professionals. Murmurs that turn to exclamations once they note the incredibly reasonable prices.
Produce is mostly limited to staples, like garlic, and perhaps an avocado or two—but with an excellent farmer’s market just down the street every Saturday, Royal Blue is wise to focus on what it does so well.
