“What the Fearless Critic books and apps have that UrbanSpoon and Yelp don’t is a complete lack of bullshit.”
“I’ve spent years driving around with Zagat...but I think I’ll replace it with this Fearless Critic guide.”

Hey Cupcake!
Regular cupcakes, magnificent salesmanship

The nation seems to have weathered a Roland-Emmerich-sized cupcake wave, and as the frosting recedes, these shiny little Airstream trailers remain strewn throughout Austin like cartoony testaments to the fearsome power of a visual aid: in this case, a giant plastic pink cupcake. It just looks like a good idea, no matter if you’ve just eaten, and nevermind that you’re not all that keen on cupcakes to begin with. And Hey Cupcake! isn’t lauded for its execution much, anyway; they’re often dry and uninspired, relying on an infusion of whipped cream (canned) to substitute a sense of specialness. If you’re here already (waiting in an interminable line, because popularity rarely signals quality), the red velvet, strawberry, and carrot cake varieties have more going on than do your other options. To aficionados, the frosting just has that greasy, heavy texture and the cocoa tastes…well it doesn’t taste, really. Where other bakers have popped up around town with a committed focus on new cupcake recipes and perfecting the interplay of textures and flavors, this one seems happy to just glide along (or park in perpetuity) in the median, flashing its pastel goodies and banking on propagation and people’s positive response to a yummy-looking visual. We admit we’re not immune, either, or else we wouldn’t have so many new Apple products.
