This longtime, beloved South Austin hangout has relocated to bigger digs, but fear not, it’s not far from the old digs (obviously, or a name change would be in order). Many locals still congregate regularly at this pleasant, airy coffeeshop to shoot the breeze, discuss left-wing politics, and pretend to study or work.
The easygoing, usually pierced staff now takes orders both tableside and from the counter, from a vegetarian (and vegan and gluten-free) menu of sandwiches, salads, and breakfasts. What it offers in dietary generosity, however, it lacks in execution. The coffee (although from commendably shade-grown and bird-friendly beans) is hopelessly weak, but espresso drinks are serviceable. Most dishes suffer from the blandness of ’80s-era vegetarian cuisine, and then try to compensate with lots of fresh herbs—too many, and too haphazardly chosen in the case of the salsa. But the larger kitchen means improvements overall, like moister eggs. “Granola Sunrise,” with honeyed yogurt (or vegan “ambrosia”), fruits, and nuts is deliciously sweet and crunchy. As ever with this cuisine, ingredients like soy “bacon” are no good—better to celebrate the vegetables than substitute the meat: salads here are better and more flavorful than anywhere else. Rose lemonade is refreshing, if heavy-handed on the rosewater, and Fireman’s 4 on draft is a great reason to sit outside on a warm evening, amid the din of your happy veggie neighbors.
