Fonté is an excellent local micro-roaster; it’s been around for a while, but until it opened this flagship shop, its coffee wasn’t always easy to find. So it’s nice to have a dedicated retail shop.
Beige, beige, beige: from the leather couches and chairs to light-colored wood tables, it’s the pallor of choice for Fonté, interrupted only by a few curvy brown leather swivel chairs and a barista station that is so white and sterile it looks like a parody of how coffee will be served in the future. The upscale space is very attractive, and the polished contemporary feel makes more sense than some shaggy neighborhood aesthetic because Fonté doubles as a wine bar. The list here is lovely, extensive, deep, and deep, and you should play around with it: there are a few flights, and a selection of smaller pours.
The menu was developed by Jason Wilson of Crush, so the food is far from an afterthought; it’s by far the best and most sophisticated fare you could get at a place that focuses so intensely on coffee. Eggs are organic and fresh from his family’s farm. Hearty sandwiches like gruyère, bacon, and caramelized onion and the all-day breakfast menu seem custom-built for freelancers keeping weird hours. Happy-hour patrons get the usual (i.e. lamb sliders) along with interesting soups (spiced chickpea and ginger) and a nice selection of Salumi cured meats to accompany wine choices. The wine and beer lists are color-coded to aid pairings.
