“What the Fearless Critic books and apps have that UrbanSpoon and Yelp don’t is a complete lack of bullshit.”
“I’ve spent years driving around with Zagat...but I think I’ll replace it with this Fearless Critic guide.”

Salty’s on Alki Beach
The prices are insane for so-so seafood, but the view’s unbeatable

Forever walking the line between overpriced tourist trap and splurge-worthy Seattle institution, Salty’s fares slightly better than its other similar restaurants. Location is a big draw here: there are terrific views of not only the sparkling sound, but also of Seattle’s skyline. Plenty of tables inside enjoy this view, but the dining room is otherwise nondescript, and the deck is really the place to be when it’s nice out.

Some people talk up the weekend brunch, but the buffet will not only make you feel like you’re in Vegas or on a cruise ship, it will also likely feel like a rip-off no matter how much you eat—there are plenty of spots making excellent eggs Benedict or throwing a little crab into the mac and cheese for much less money. Lunch isn’t much more of a deal, but there are a few “blue plate specials.” Really, all you need is a cup of the signature seafood chowder, an intense and briny stew full of clams and scallops. At dinner, Dungeness crab rules, and shellfish samplers are popular. Fish fillets are sometimes overcooked, but the kitchen is reasonably competent with wild salmon and halibut.

The service is top-notch, and if you keep your eyes on the view while signing the check, the whole experience might almost be worth it.
