Don Café is big and vibrant, and while relatively undecorated, it’s comfortable and bright. The counter is normally manned with one of the friendly owning family members. Even if there’s a long line—local office workers tend to bring huge to-go-order lists at lunchtime—food will come quickly, and you’ll be in and out within 30 minutes.
The Vietnamese classics are all decent: bowls of hot noodle soup (including an alluring sour snail soup that’s got the most satisfying texture for the orally fixated), crispy Vietnamese egg rolls, and rice plates with charcoal-grilled pork. But the star of the show is banh mi. It’s an absolutely fresh, warm, and tasty creation that’s worth triple its $2.50 price. The pièce de résistance is the crusty baguette with its velvety innards. The carrots aren’t pickled, though, and the jalapeño’s a little ungainly and seeded; but overall, with the cilantro, pâté, mayo, and great cold cuts or grilled meat, it’s a happy symphony.
For a place this affordable, you wouldn’t expect things to be so consistently terrific, but even the packaged spring rolls sitting on the counter are as moist and fresh as any. The coffee’s not made to order; rather it’s kept in a pot where it gets tinny. But your cheap, quick sandwich (and sour snail soup) needs? Covered.
