Overview Hailing from the Pacific Northwest—a part of the world that’s known for exceptionally hoppy beers—Deschutes has done quite well with its Black Butte Porter. While the market for porters is small, that hasn’t stopped this from becoming one of the bestselling craft beers in the country.

Flavors and aromas A grainy, roasty nose suggests coffee, with chocolate emerging as the beer warms. In the mouth, there’s some richness to the body, and ample, well-defined roast character. Bitterness is well matched to the malt and roast character, and good carbonation keeps things lively. The finish is clean and slightly bitter. It’s a straightforward example of the style that hits all the important notes.
