Overview The strong Baltic porter style—and this is one of the strongest—recalls a time when England exported beer, often strong beer, all over the world. This style is noteworthy in part for being fermented with lager yeasts.

Flavors and aromas If you’re bothered by the smell of butterscotch, stop here—Black Boss is not for you. There are heaping helpings of diacetyl (the source of that smell in beer) in the nose of this beer. But in the mouth this is much more interesting, with a full, sweet, and intensely nutty palate. Roast character and bitterness are both low, and some drinkers may find this too sweet, but we found it to be pleasant, if not exactly a beer for a long afternoon of drinking.
