Overview It’s hard to talk to Texans about beer without getting a pitch for Shiner Bock—they really seem to love the stuff. The Spoetzl brewery where it is produced is one of the only pre-Prohibition craft breweries in the US still in operation.

Flavors and aromas Not all bock beers are equal. Shiner Bock is perhaps the best known example of an American bock—it’s basically an American pale lager with a touch of grain to color. A light nose with only faint malt betrays none of the rich caramels of German bock, and the palate is malty and slightly sweet. This hits most of the high points of American macro-lager, though. Good clean character, nice carbonation, and light malt make this a refreshing beer that’s more brewski than bier.
