“What the Fearless Critic books and apps have that UrbanSpoon and Yelp don’t is a complete lack of bullshit.”
“I’ve spent years driving around with Zagat...but I think I’ll replace it with this Fearless Critic guide.”

Trophy Cupcakes
Probably the best cupcakes in Seattle

With its old-timey candy store motif, all turquoise accents, and brown-candy-striped awnings, Trophy hits you with the adorable right away and doesn’t let up. These are picture-perfect cupcakes, often with cute names (like the “Hummingbird”) and concepts (like varieties that recreate a PB&J sandwich, snickerdoodles, or Girl Scout Samoas).

Rich concoctions like lemon cake with coconut butter cream topped with coconut shavings or carrot-walnut cake with cream cheese frosting can require two sittings to finish—unless you’re into immediate post-meal waves of shame and nausea. Although frostings generally have some nice stiffness that saves them from being too gooey or syrupy, they’re still pretty heavy and sweet—the peanut butter frosting, though delicious, has the kind of consistency that painfully adheres itself to our cavities. Clearly, Trophy knows its way around the arty cupcake, and the chai cardamom variety has no equal in the city.
