Overview The smoke quality in these beers is as much a nod to tradition as a question of style. Historically, barley was frequently dried over open fires, so smoked malt was the rule, rather than the exception. Bamberg is the home of Germany’s living rauchbier tradition.

Flavors and aromas Intense, fresh campfire smoke jumps out of the glass, making this an immediately polarizing beer. In the mouth, there’s more smokiness, as well as some definite fruity malt character pulling this towards balance. Other than the smoke, this gives a definite impression of clean character, but it’s not for the faint of heart.
