Overview Mendocino Brewing, under its original name (Hopland), was the country’s second post-Prohibition brewpub. Their flagship Red Tail Ale has been a brewery staple since they opened, though early bottlings were limited to 1.5L bottles. Nowadays, Mendocino Brewing is holding up its image as the champion for alternative lifestyles: we once saw the brewer pouring draught beer at Burning Man.

Flavors and aromas Our tasters were split between those who liked the piney hops and mild bitterness of this light-bodied ale, and those who found it to lack substance and heft. It’s worth a try just for a taste of craft beer history, though.
