Erick’s Tacos
Tacos top the list but this stuck truck aspires to more

The view of Erick’s Tacos says nothing more than Mexican street food. In front of a former garage, its doors raised, sits a not-too-mobile truck where you can order mini-tacos laden with the likes of al pastor, carne asada, and chorizo con bistec. To one side is a kitchen serving up corn in a cup, fruit cups, strawberries and crema, paletas, and aguas frescas. There is nothing special about the setting; there is everything special about the food.

The mini-tacos, four to a plate, arrive crowned with fresh cilantro and onions. At the center is a roasted jalapeño and a few strands of grilled onions. The meats, crisped on the sides and tender at center, merge with the tiny corn tortillas and their toppings (anoint it all with some freshly squeezed limes and the house-made habanero salsa) to create a package that people line up for in the draftiest winds of January and the most stultifying heat of August. An agua fresca is always a good bet, but don’t ignore the classic Mexican Fresca made with cane sugar; its grapefruit flavor goes with everything. The menu has expanded in recent months to include quesadillas, fish tacos, champurrado (a hot chocolate made with masa flour) and flan. (Note: Erick plans to become even more grounded soon if plans to open in the adjacent “Waiting Room” materialize.)

Erick’s stays open until 4 a.m. and draws a late-night crowd that includes plenty of families as well as those exiting the bars. Bring along a set of dominoes and you could find yourself with a new group of friends.
