“What the Fearless Critic books and apps have that UrbanSpoon and Yelp don’t is a complete lack of bullshit.”
“I’ve spent years driving around with Zagat...but I think I’ll replace it with this Fearless Critic guide.”

Ferraro’s Foods
A cheap, dumpy market that’s got meat, meat, and basic staples...and meat

The hulking warehouse down the street from what looks suspiciously like a mob front (we’ve seen The Godfather trilogy too many times) is Ferraro’s Fine Foods. Not what you’d expect, given the city’s plethora of fancy-schmancy truffle-oil-pushing Italian specialty groceries. But this is why we like it.

Inside, Ferraro’s would be a pretty standard, slightly sorry grocery store were it not for two things: (1) the signs depicting actual neighborhood streets that designate each aisle, and (2) the phenomenal butchers. If you live in New Haven and you need meat—any kind, any cut—you come here. If they don’t have it, they’ll get it for you. Pig’s feet? Got it. Pig’s head? Check. Stay in the store long enough and you’ll hear loud, Italian-accented men bellowing their specials over the PA system: I gotcher veal chops over here. Nice loin chops. $11.99 a pound. Don’t everyone run over at once.

Produce is kind of bare bones, and the rest of the groceries in the store may have dust on them, but they’re also way cheap. It’s all about the meat and fish, anyway. They even make their own sausages. Seafood is also plentiful, though not as extensive as Bud’s in Branford (but much cheaper here).

But we have one big beef with Ferraro’s: closing at 6pm every day doesn’t leave anyone enough time after getting off work to stop in for groceries. Needless to say, this place is a zoo on Saturdays. As for the help they offer with getting your stuff out to your car? You might want to take them up on it, if you had to park a block away.
