“What the Fearless Critic books and apps have that UrbanSpoon and Yelp don’t is a complete lack of bullshit.”
“I’ve spent years driving around with Zagat...but I think I’ll replace it with this Fearless Critic guide.”

Christian’s Tailgate
A reliable divey burger that has its place—among karaoke stars and $1 Bud Lights

There are two Christian’s locations: the original, a soulful shack-like structure on Washington; and the newer one, a commercialized, confused place that’s let its hip Midtown location go to its head. Many people prefer the original because of its comfortable outdoor patio and long-storied history; perhaps that just makes the food taste better. The draw is the burgers and simple food, like fried chicken tenders and fried catfish po’ boys. However famous they are, the burgers are just good and honest: a well-seasoned patty piled with lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, mustard, and mayonnaise on a fluffy bun. People go crazy for the meat, which is ground and formed in house—but there are plenty of places that just buy the frozen patties and still make a better burger. Christian’s claims to honor rare orders, but it’s never come less than medium; on the bright side, at least they don’t overcook it, either.

This being, first and foremost, a bar, there are theme parties weekly with karaoke and retro videos—and some ridiculous specials, like $1 domestic drafts and well drinks. The regulars are a scrappy bunch that don’t take lightly to the riff-raff walking in off the street, but the staff are (for the most part) friendly—until the place gets really packed, in which case, look out.
