Mia’s Pizza
Top-notch pizza up in Bethesda

There’s no shortage of pizza egos in DC. And we’re not talking about the egos of the proprietors—we’re talking about the egos of the patrons. This is a city where one’s favorite spot for a pie is a defining characteristic that’s worn with pride. You’ve got your 2 Amys camp (which is where you’ll find us), whose followers are rivaled in number by those of the Pizzeria Paradiso persuasion. Then there’s a whole class of what we’ll call “Jumbo Slicers,” but they can’t be trusted; they’re usually a few too many drinks into the evening.

But tucked away up in Bethesda, on the hip strip that is Cordell Ave., sits Mia’s Pizza, which deserves its own following. And clearly it does have one among the locals. Come on a warm summer night, and you’ll be hard-pressed to get a seat on the idyllic patio. (The least appealing part of the patio is the noise from the rambunctious crowd across the way at Caddy’s, but it’s easy enough to tune out.) Inside, the space is fresh and new with bright colors and clean lines. The clientele is a fun, appropriately suburban mix of dates (both young and old), chatty groups of friends, and families with kiddos in tow.

And they’re all eating some pretty good pizza. Mia’s margherita (our standard test for pies—it’s classic, and there’s nothing to hide behind) gets our seal of approval. Thankfully, this is one of the few pizza kitchens in town to know that “margherita” doesn’t mean “white pizza with fresh tomatoes,” but rather a sauced red pie. Mia’s tomato sauce is sweet, but not overly so; the cheese is melted, but not stringy or too oozy; and the crust is nicely seared, but still with a bit of puff to it.

The beer selection is decent, and let’s face it—beer is pizza’s soulmate more than wine will ever be. (Call us snarky Italophiles, but you’ll never see Italians having wine with pizza.) We’ll even have a Coca-Cola with our pie before wine. How’s that for reverse snobbery?
