Cuisine from the cradle that will fill you up and make you happy

Among the most amusing—if not rewarding—rituals at African Village Restaurant is the fufu sup. A blend of rice and yam flours pounded and molded into smooth, elastic logs as white as sportscaster teeth, fufu is the pasta of Africa. Pinch a nub off the log, roll it into a marble, mesh it for example with edi-kai-foh, a semi-bitter kale-like green interlaced with spinach, and plop it into your mouth. African Village is the most authentic purveyor of a diverse swath of African cuisine in Dallas-Fort Worth—and remains fiercely committed to that authenticity.

You can find foodstuff examples from virtually every crook and jog in the second largest continent on the planet. Each of the four regions is represented: couscous from the North, chapati (flat bread) from the East, doh doh (fried plantains) from the West, and nshima (cornmeal porridge) from the South.

The environs are Spartan. Drinks such as Malta Guinness and palm wine are dispensed from a refrigerator case. Simple tables and chairs are surrounded with walls covered with light wood paneling and photos of soccer teams from Nigeria, Tonga, Egypt, Algeria, and Ghana among others. Big screen TVs carry satellite broadcasts of FIFA World cup, African Cup of Nations competition, Major League Soccer (MLS), and English Premier League (EPL), not to mention selected clashes between NBA and NFL teams. What better accompaniment could there be to a goat’s head cooked in African spices?
