This 25-year old staple earned its cred by serving inexpensive drinks and hearty appetizers in a comfortable, casual atmosphere. Touting itself as a great place for a swift lunch or an easy dinner, Cretia’s makes everything fresh daily; from soups and breads to pastas, pies, cakes, and cookies.
Yet the traffic doesn’t seem brisk enough to sell through all these items daily. Plus the breads are a little doughy. But Cretia’s seasonally changing menu packs loads of comfort classics like rotisserie turkey, prime rib, buttermilk-fried chicken, pan-seared trout, and roasted pork tenderloin. Sides include the likes of silky Gorgonzola polenta. Yet some of the mains leave much to be desired: chicken-fried steak is soggy while the rotisserie turkey is fatty.
Cretia does create a credible weekend brunch, though, serving “Eggs Pontchartrain” with fried eggplant; poached eggs in a spicy Creole sauce; and crispy beignets coated with powdered cocoa sugar and caramel. Or sample “Texas Benedict” with rotisserie pork, queso fresco, cilantro, avocado, and chipotle hollandaise. Still, relaxing on the side patio with a $3 glass of happy-hour wine is really the best bet here. Servers are quick with refills, and though the happy hour wine won’t blow your vino-phile mind, it’s still just $3—enough to get your wallet sozzled.
