Best known for its haute gut gasket breakfasts and tasty brunches, Breadwinners is an Uptown staple. You’ll find lines wrapping around the building on Saturday and Sunday mornings; crowds ripe with anticipation for mammoth cinnamon rolls; migas with eggs, chorizo, tortillas, and cheese. Or savor queen of hearts salad with hearts of palm, artichoke hearts, and celery hearts plus chicken. Steak and eggs is plated with beef tenderloin medallions and hearty brunch potatoes.
Though not as well known for dinner service, the airy restaurant becomes a romantic respite once the sun sets, gently illuminated with candles and mini white lights. The helpful, friendly staff is more attentive than it is during the day, when crowds tend to dilute their competency. Most nights feature food and/or drink specials. Sample smoked Gouda fondue, wild mushroom ravioli, grilled mahi, or braised short ribs. The wine list is inexpensive, but unimaginative. Frozen cherry limeade is fantastic though.
The expansive patio—lush with ferns and other greenery—is popular morning, noon, and night. The small bakery inside unleashes torrents of decadent cakes, pies, cookies, and bread. Key lime pie and the tomato basil bread are noteworthy.
