“What the Fearless Critic books and apps have that UrbanSpoon and Yelp don’t is a complete lack of bullshit.”
“I’ve spent years driving around with Zagat...but I think I’ll replace it with this Fearless Critic guide.”

Seasons 52
Susceptible to caloric shock? Every dish is under 475 calories. Stent lovers unite!

Its name rings like something from the marketing department, hinting at seasonal fare (52 represents the weeks in a year). And this is one of the upmarket chain’s conceits—they promise to change the menu weekly. In reality, however, only a thin menu insert rotates. Many of their items are mainstays, week in, week out.

But there’s more from the ever-busy marketing department. Seasons 52 also lays claim to an astonishing feat: limiting every dish to something under 475 calories. Portion size helps accomplish this when it comes to desserts, including rich pecan pie, all of which are layered artfully into narrow, test tube-like glassware. Trout dressed simply in citrus and herbs—yes, you can believe its calorie count, as well. Vegetables occupy half the plate, after all. But stuffed mushrooms covered in melted cheese?

Well, we’ve come away from every visit with a somewhat-less-than-satisfied sensation, as if something were missing from the meal. We’re thinking butter and cream. Fat, after all, means flavor—as well as that sated feeling. Yet the kitchen really shows few shortcomings, under the circumstances. The only real flaw may be in the dark, clubby, steakhouse-like ambience, which seems at odds with its heart- and beltline-friendly mission.
