Overview Weinhard’s was a staple of our college drinking days, and it seems like the relationship we had to the beer was not new—in 1887, Henry Weinhard offered to fill the new Skidmore Fountain in downtown Portland with beer for its inauguration.
Flavors and aromas The Private Reserve, a pale American lager that had a lot more character than we expected of it, was one of the pleasant surprises of our blind tastings. While this beer has the light sweetness and low bitterness of many of its peers, it’s got a fair whack of hop character, both in flavor and aroma, and a crisp, fresh finish. Was this beer this good back when we were drinking it in college? We can only speculate.
