Overview Pilsner Urquell—Czech for
“original pilsner”—was first
brewed in 1842, and the beer
world hasn’t been the same since.
Judging by world production, the
novelty of pale, clean, light beers
still hasn’t quite worn off.
Flavors and aromas The traditional light-skunk/noble hop
combo came out here, giving this
a generally bright nose, with some
milder cooked corn notes. The
palate has lightstruck notes, with
very mild malt sweetness, and
crisp hops are stronger than
standard Continental lagers like
Becks or Heineken without quite
reaching the intensity of a Bavarian
pils. Finish is lingeringly bitter and
our tasters felt it overwhelmed the
malt.
