Overview Maredsous is a Benedictine order in Belgium known—like Chimay—for beer and cheese. The cheeses are made at the abbey, but the beer is brewed by Duvel Moortgat under a 1963 arrangement.
Flavors and aromas The mahogany color of this beer suits the flavor profile, from the sherry, allspice, and warm dark caramel nose to the mild smoky roasted grain notes in the palate and dark dried fruits. There are hints of tobacco and wood and a soft background sourness, with moderately low carbonation for a Belgian-style ale. Drying alcohol and an oiliness to the mouthfeel kept this from really grabbing us.
